Study Cites Benefits but Caution Regarding Iodine

Written by Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS. China’s 16- year program of food fortification with iodine to reduce iodine insufficiency was significantly effective in four cities that had inadequate iodine levels prior to the intake of iodine fortified food; however, the program significantly increased thyroid disorders in 6 cities that already had adequate iodine intake levels.

Zinc and Selenium Improve Thyroid Function in Obese, Hypothyroid Women

In this 12-week study of 68 obese female adults with hypothyroidism, those who supplemented with zinc or a zinc-selenium combination had a significant improvement in thyroid hormones (free T3 and T4); however, additional tests are needed to determine if  a combination of selenium-zinc or zinc alone are effective in preventing thyroid dysfunction. Vitamin E and Calcium May Curb Harms of Consuming Cured Meats

Written by Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS. Curing meats is used for preservation but usually uses nitrates which are chemicals that have a cancer risk. In an animal study those supplemented with calcium had 67% lower levels of a material linked to cell damage and 52% less of  precancerous lessions. Vitamin E had 48% lower levels of precancerous lesions. (more…)
